About Beatrice Benzi

Beatrice Benzi

Beatrice Benzi graduated from the Conservatorio “G. Verdi” in Milano, having studied with Maestro Bruno Canino, with whom she did further advanced study in Milano and Barcelona. She also studied with Michele Campanella at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena

She continued her musical activities both as a duo-pianist, with her former school classmate Gianandrea Noseda, and also in vocal accompaniment.

With the orchestra at La Scala she participated in a world concert tour, which included appearances in Japan and Australia with Maestro Riccardo Muti. She worked at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia as assistant to Zubin Mehta on productions of Il trovatore, Otello, and La forza del destino. Also with Maestro Mehta, she has coached productions of Otello, Falstaff, Un ballo in maschera, and Turandot at the Charles Brofman Auditorium in Tel Aviv with the Israel Philharmonic. Since 1991, Beatrice Benzi has been on the coaching staff (maestro collaboratore) at La Scala.

In 2010, Maestra Benzi gave a master class on Italian repertoire for the young winners of the Gerda Lissner Competition in New York, sponsored by the Liederkranz Foundation, and for three years was on the teaching staff of the opera course in Montepulciano. She taught operatic interpretation in Italian repertoire in 2014 at the University of Utah at a program organized by Dolora Zajick.

Benzi was assistant, again to Maestro Mehta, in a production of Rigoletto in Mantova, broadcast on RAI with Placido Domingo. With Decca, she collaborated with Maestro Riccardo Chailly in the recordings: Cantate di Rossini, Il turco in Italia, and Pavarotti’s Greatest Hits.

As collaborative pianist at La Scala, Beatrice Benzi has assisted Riccardo Muti, Riccardo Chailly, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Jeffrey Tate, James Conlon, Daniel Harding, Zubin Mehta, Patrick Fourniller, Valere Gerghiev, Donato Renzetti, etc. Also at La Scala she has served as Maestra di Cemballo for productions of Così fan tutte and Il viaggio a Reims.

Among the singers with whom Benzi has collaborated are Cecilia Bartoli, Chris Merritt, Dolora Zajick, Leo Nucci, Samuel Ramey, Andrea Rost, Annik Massis, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and many, many others. On the occasion of the awarding of the Aureliano Pertile Competition prizes, she has collaborated in recitals with Marcello Giordani, John Osborn, Gregory Kunde, and Fabio Sartori.
